Frequently Asked Questions
Can this strip really be used outside, or is 'waterproof' just marketing?
The IP65-rated silicone-coated strip is genuinely splash- and rain-resistant and is widely used on patios and for outdoor holiday displays. Only the power adapter and IR controller need to stay sheltered or covered.
Will the adhesive hold up against rain and humidity?
On clean, dry, smooth outdoor surfaces like wood railings, metal posts, and PVC trim, the upgraded 3M-style adhesive holds well. For long-term outdoor installs, most customers add a few silicone mounting clips for extra security.
Can I leave the strip outside year-round?
The IP65 rating covers splashes and rain, but it is not rated for full submersion or prolonged exposure to standing water or extreme UV. For permanent outdoor use, we recommend bringing it indoors during severe weather or off-season.
How long is the 66ft version when fully unrolled on a patio?
66 feet covers most standard patios, wraparound deck railings, or the perimeter of a covered pergola. If your space is smaller, the strip can be cut to length at the marked scissor points.
Will the colors be visible in daylight, or only at night?
Like most LED strips, the colors are most vivid after dusk. In direct daylight, the 300 SMD LEDs are still visible, but the glow effect is much more dramatic once the sun goes down.
Is this good for a backyard party or barbecue?
It is one of the most popular budget options for outdoor entertaining. The 8 dynamic modes and 20 colors let you set a fun vibe for a barbecue, birthday, or game night, and the IP65 rating means an unexpected drizzle will not kill the party.
Can I use it for Christmas or holiday outdoor decorating?
Yes. Many customers wrap it around porch columns, run it along rooflines of covered patios, or spiral it around outdoor Christmas trees. Red, green, and white static modes cover the classic holiday palette.
What about using it while camping or on an RV?
It is a popular add-on for campers because it runs on 12V DC and uses only 60W total, so it is safe to run off a portable power station or 12V battery with the right adapter. The IP65 rating handles overnight dew and light rain.
Does the remote work through a screen door or window?
The IR remote works best with line-of-sight to the small receiver on the controller, typically within 15-20 feet. Through glass it usually still works, but through solid walls or closed doors the signal can be blocked.
Can I link two strips for a longer outdoor run?
Yes. The linkable design lets you connect additional strips end-to-end for a continuous run. Just keep in mind the total wattage stays under the 60W capacity of the included adapter.
How does this compare to solar-powered outdoor string lights?
Solar string lights are wireless and great for ambient fairy-light looks, but they tend to be dim, weather-dependent, and limited to one color. This strip is brighter, fully color-changing, and reliably bright on cloudy days because it plugs into AC power.
Is it better than permanent outdoor LED landscape lighting?
Permanent landscape lighting is more durable and weather-sealed but is far more expensive and requires hardwiring. For temporary, seasonal, or rental outdoor setups, this strip is a much more affordable and flexible choice.
How does it compare to neon rope light for outdoor patios?
Neon rope gives a continuous glow but is heavier, harder to install, and typically one color. This RGB strip is lighter, more versatile, and offers 20 colors plus 8 dynamic modes for the same or lower price.
I'm worried the strip won't survive a storm. Is it really waterproof?
The IP65 rating means it can handle water jets and rain from any direction, but it is not designed to be fully submerged. For severe storms, unplug the adapter and either cover the strip or bring it inside.
Will the colors fade from prolonged sun exposure?
The silicone coating helps protect the LEDs from UV, but like most LED strips, direct, all-day sunlight can gradually dim the output over many months. For best longevity, install it on a covered patio, pergola, or shaded outdoor area.
Does the plug need a GFCI outdoor outlet?
For any outdoor electrical accessory, we strongly recommend plugging the 12V adapter into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. This is a basic electrical safety standard for outdoor setups.
How do I install the LED strip lights?
Clean the surface with alcohol or a non-residue cleaner, let it dry fully, peel the backing off the 3M-style adhesive, and press the strip firmly into place along your chosen edge. Then connect the strip to the IR controller, plug the 12V adapter into a wall outlet, and use the remote to turn it on. Most installations take less than 10 minutes.
Can I cut the strip to a custom length?
Yes. The strip has clearly marked scissor cut points, usually every 3 LEDs. Cut only on these marked lines, and make sure the power is unplugged before cutting. Unused sections can be saved for future projects or discarded.
How do I link two strips together?
Most DAYBETTER strips include a linkable connector on the end. Simply align the copper pads, slide the connector on, and make sure the arrows on the strip match the polarity of the connector. The total run should not exceed the wattage limit of your power supply.
Does it work with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit?
The standard kit uses an IR remote and is not natively compatible with voice assistants. To add smart control, plug the 12V adapter into a smart plug or smart outlet that works with your preferred ecosystem, and you can use voice commands to turn the strip on or off.
Will it work behind any TV size?
Yes, but choose the strip length based on the back panel of your TV. A 16.4ft strip is usually enough for TVs up to 55 inches, while 32.8ft and 66ft work well for larger TVs or for running along a media wall.
What is included in the box?
The kit typically includes the LED strip in your chosen length, a 12V DC power adapter, an IR controller box, a 44-key remote (batteries may or may not be included depending on the seller), and a small user manual. Mounting clips are sometimes included, otherwise they are a recommended add-on for outdoor or long runs.
Is it safe to leave on overnight or while I am away?
Yes. The 12V DC power supply runs cool and the LEDs themselves produce very little heat. There is no open flame, no hot bulb, and no risk of overheating under normal use. As with any electrical device, do not cover the adapter or controller, and unplug during severe storms if used outdoors.
Does it get hot enough to damage walls, paint, or furniture?
No. The strip runs at a low temperature under normal use, well below the level that would affect paint, drywall, wood, or plastic. It is safe to leave on surfaces like the back of a TV, under cabinets, and along baseboards.
What is the difference between LED strip lights and rope lights?
LED strip lights are flat, flexible circuit boards with surface-mount LEDs, allowing them to sit flush against surfaces and produce a wall-washing glow. Rope lights are round, tube-encased LEDs that look more like a string light. Strips are usually brighter, more color-accurate, and easier to mount, while rope lights are bulkier but more visible as a decorative element.
